Shorty’s, Garema Place, Civic, January, 2017

Shorty’s advertises itself as a bar, but it also serves food. It is known for its Monday-Wednesday lunch specials ($15.00 on each day for burgers, chicken parmigiana or steak, respectively. Due to this it meets the budget brief but we decided to go on a different day and try two of the specials and one other menu item. Continue reading

Cobblestone Lane, Bathurst. September, 2016

Jamie

This is another unplanned review.  Possibly more unplanned reviews should be included but then more consistent timing etc. would also be nice.

For a place the size of Bathurst, it saddens me to report that many of the places we’ve tried have been okay or immediately delegated to the ‘do not return’ category.

We went to Cobblestone Lane not long after it first opened.  At the time the food was okay but the service was off-putting, in that we did not feel welcome.

Visiting Bathurst, I decided to try it again, especially as the lunch was $40.00 for two courses and $45.00 for three courses. Continue reading

Kokoro Japanese Restaurant, Gungahlin.

Kokoro is a pleasant restaurant situated near Coles in the Gungahlin shopping area.  It offers lunch specials and a variety of Japanese food and also is a place where you can try the Blooming Tea which is pretty to look at and nice to drink.

As both Lindsay and Alexi desired sushi, sashimi, takoyaki, etc., ta decision was made to try a banquet for two people and thus this blog entry will be a little different to the normal entries.

P. J. O’Reilly’s

In our second Pub of the Month review blog we went to P. J. O’Reilly’s which offers a $13.00 lunch special.

For those who have never been there, PJ’s (as it is often called) is an ‘Irish’ Pub in the Melbourne Building in Civic.

We decided to try three different lunch specials.  Please remember we had only recently visited Michael’s at Walsh’s and returned there the day after going to PJ’s for reasons.

Michael’s at Walsh’s, Queanbeyan

It is Spring and people’s thoughts turn to… Beer Gardens and Pubs.

Not really.  Strangely enough the random selection method we use managed to place the names of two Pubs as the venues for our next reviews and for fun and no other reason we added a third.

For the rest of this month we have the theme: Three Pubs.

Even though Michael’s at Walsh’s has been in the Entertainment Book for a few years we didn’t think of eating there.  We had planned to review a different restaurant but, as circumstances were against us, this was a late substitution.

Alexi

We ordered an entrée to come out before our mains which was Mediterranean Garlic Bread ($8.50).  It was covered with fetta, both green and black olives, shallots, parsley and semi sundried tomatoes on Turkish bread.  It was incredibly good.  It had been grilled so the fetta had melted nicely and it was moist without being soggy.  I enjoyed it, a lot. The Noodle Cafe August 2015

It is purely coincidence we seem to be reviewing so many restaurants close to Garema Place.  The selection of places to review is pretty random so it is not possible to predict if the ones reviewed are clustered the way these seem to be.

That being said this review is for The Noodle Café which is situated in Garema Place.  The Noodle Café has lunch specials ($11.00) which certainly meets our brief and the variety offered is good enough to make decisions of what to order a little difficult.

Tasuke, Civic, June, 2015

A promise: In future blogs the drooling will be kept to a minimum unless absolutely necessary. There will be no gratuitous drooling or attempting to munch on the computer screen. There is no guarantee that tangents will be avoided.
Finally we have a chance to review a restaurant that provides quite a different menu to those we have reviewed up until now. Tasuke is a Japanese restaurant which provides weekly lunch specials ($9.99) 5 days a week and other, larger lunch specials (up to $15.00 approx.) each day it is open. The seating is mainly benches (which may be a little off putting for anyone with a bad back), but at the end of each table there is a sear with cushions and the wall can be used to lean against. (Yay!)
This is a restaurant with few gimmicks. It is not very large, sells take-away sandwiches etc., and the décor is plain, but who cares, if the food is good?

Wood and Coal May, 2015

Wood and Coal have received mixed reviews.  It is always a little daunting to review a restaurant where some reviews hate the food and like the service, or hate the service and like the food.  Wood and Coal have received both.

We arrived early: 11.30 am and were politely informed we were too early but we were invited to take a seat if we felt so inclined.  We decided to wander off and brave the wilds of Gareema Place for the half hour. (Mostly) intact after the half an hour of excitement doing some window shopping, we returned and were promptly offered the choice of where we wished to sit.  Once seated, we were given our menus (single sheet), water and a large folder which contained all the drinks which were available.  The wait staff were very pleasant and attentive.
