Random Recipes: Chicken Dijon with Garden Salad freely adapted from Family Circle Dinner Parties and Lindsay’s 5 minutes “What’s in the Fridge?” Pasta Sauce

The inspiration for this recipe came from Family Circle Dinner Parties Murdoch Books 1993.  As the book may still be considered protected under copyright law I have only included the cover shot of the book for clarity.

As usual I made some changes to the recipe which in turn makes it a new recipe and is not subject to the original copyright.

I can recall one recipe (Asparagus with Orange Hollandaise) was made using the recipe from this book and it was quite pleasant.

P. J. O’Reilly’s

In our second Pub of the Month review blog we went to P. J. O’Reilly’s which offers a $13.00 lunch special.

For those who have never been there, PJ’s (as it is often called) is an ‘Irish’ Pub in the Melbourne Building in Civic.

We decided to try three different lunch specials.  Please remember we had only recently visited Michael’s at Walsh’s and returned there the day after going to PJ’s for reasons.

Random Recipes: Chicken in Brandy Wine

Jamie

The Cookery of England by Elizabeth Aryton was purchased at a Lifeline Book Fair.

To be honest, some recipes in this book have been used in the past and it will definitely be kept in the cook book library but this time it was decided to try something different.

After rejecting a number of possibilities (making a raised pie did not fit with my plans for the day) we settled on Chicken in Brandy Wine.  This looked like a chicken and white wine version of Beef bourguignon as it has white wine, mushrooms and onions and also reminded me of Coq au Vin.

Michael’s at Walsh’s, Queanbeyan

It is Spring and people’s thoughts turn to… Beer Gardens and Pubs.

Not really.  Strangely enough the random selection method we use managed to place the names of two Pubs as the venues for our next reviews and for fun and no other reason we added a third.

For the rest of this month we have the theme: Three Pubs.

Even though Michael’s at Walsh’s has been in the Entertainment Book for a few years we didn’t think of eating there.  We had planned to review a different restaurant but, as circumstances were against us, this was a late substitution.

We ordered an entrée to come out before our mains which was Mediterranean Garlic Bread ($8.50).  It was covered with fetta, both green and black olives, shallots, parsley and semi sundried tomatoes on Turkish bread.  It was incredibly good.  It had been grilled so the fetta had melted nicely and it was moist without being soggy.  I enjoyed it, a lot. It is highly possible this book was purchased at one of the regular Lifeline Book Fairs.  Since the purchase it sat on the shelf, possibly overlooked, as it is quite slim and overshadowed by the larger books surrounding it.

When I pulled it out, my heart sank a little.  The book was published in 1985 and the front cover reflects the style of the time.  After opening the book, randomly, the first recipes were of seafood which posed a problem. As I neither cook nor eat seafood, fish etc. it was necessary to make a few more attempts.  Finally the page opened on this recipe.
