Cobblestone Lane, Bathurst. September, 2016

Jamie

This is another unplanned review.  Possibly more unplanned reviews should be included but then more consistent timing etc. would also be nice.

For a place the size of Bathurst, it saddens me to report that many of the places we’ve tried have been okay or immediately delegated to the ‘do not return’ category.

We went to Cobblestone Lane not long after it first opened.  At the time the food was okay but the service was off-putting, in that we did not feel welcome.

Visiting Bathurst, I decided to try it again, especially as the lunch was $40.00 for two courses and $45.00 for three courses. Continue reading

Star Kebab House, Fyshwick. September, 2016.

Part Two of the search for the best Kebab in Canberra.

Fyshwick Fresh Food markets offer many different and interesting food adventures.  Visiting the delicatessens and admiring the many varieties of cheese, cold meats, olives, pasta etc can inspire the next week of cooking meals.  The many fruit and vegetable shops offer competitive prices and if one of them is out of stock of one item, it may be found at another.  The meat, Asian supermarket, seafood and bakeries are yet another attraction.

On our many visits to the Fyshwick Fresh Food market we have bought lunch from a variety of places including the Star Kebab House.  Unlike our last review, we had some idea of the quality of the food and therefore had little to no hesitation to include this venue in our search for the best Kebab in Canberra and surrounding areas.

Harper was again assisting us with our research and being the intrepid type, decided to try one of the pide’s to add more to this review.

Como Restaurant, Blaxland. July, 2016.

In our last review we stated we would review kebab restaurants but then tragedy struck and we went to a fantastic restaurant at Blaxland in the Blue Mountains with some family members.

Lindsay took pictures in order to remember the meal and Alexi took pictures to show off the food to friends.  We did not plan to write a blog about this restaurant but the food was so good we decided to share the pictures with the world.

Como has two menus and we chose the one which had three snacks, two entrees, two mains and two desserts, plus petit fours.  ($130.00 pp)

If you plan to go to Como, make certain you have ample time to enjoy the food.

When we arrived we were warmly greeted and quickly seated.  Como is situated at Blaxland shops and has a comfortable ambience. The menu was explained and it took whole seconds for all of us to agree to the same menu.  With one of us abstaining from fish/seafood we were assured that this could be easily accommodated.

Cocorea Korean Restaurant, Civic, Canberra, July, 2016.

We were reluctant to review Cocorea, as we eat there regularly and it can be problematic to obtain a table.  The reason we eat there often: the food is consistently good, the staff are polite and efficient, the price is reasonable and the variety satisfies all of us.

Cocorea is situated in Garema place.  There are tables both inside and outside and it has recently been refurbished and the menu has changed slightly.  The food is still good and we are looking forward to trying some of the new menu items.

Saffron Restaurant, Kingston. June, 2016.

Saffron serves East Mediterranean cuisine including banquets and a la carte meals.  It was selected by the usual random method and suited all of us as we enjoy sharing meals.  For this occasion we decided to select the first banquet menu ($39.00 per person) as it featured most of the dishes we wanted to try.

As we shared the meal we’ve decided to provide our thoughts, course by course.  (Please note this review was written while we were making chicken stock so any inconsistencies may be attributed to this distraction).

Hog’s Breath Cafe, May 2016.

Apologies for the long hiatus but we were only reunited in the last few weeks.  Travelling in Italy did not inspire Jamie to write any reviews, except of Japanese, Chinese and German restaurants which intermittent internet access etc. made difficult.  Apparently Fortnum and Mason’s in London is a firm recommendation for Sunday Lunch or Afternoon Tea.

We turned to our normal randomising device to choose our new places to review and for some strange reason, which none of us can remember, Hog’s Breath Café was included and was the first to be chosen.

All of us have not too pleasant memories of the experience of eating there and were curious to see how much the dining experience had changed and if it was worthy of inclusion.  Yes, there are lunch specials, which we did not try out, but perhaps we may in the future.
